Differences between lipoedema and lymphoedema

Lipoedema

What Body parts are affected?

Legs, thighs, buttoks - feet are normal 

Arms - hands are normal

Both sides are affected

What is the swelling like

Skin is non-pitting which means hen to apply presure to your skin it doesn't leave an indent

Where does the swelling start

Usually starts at th top and moves down eg from bottom to the legs

Painful to touch

Lymphoedmea

What Body parts are affected?

Can be anywhere

Legs inlcuding toes

Arms incluidng finger

Usually only affects one side

What is the swelling like

Usually pitting. when you press the skin it leaves an indent

 

Where does the swelling start

Usually starts at the  bottom and moves up eg from feet  to legs

Not painful
